The Old Globe's 2019 Shakespeare Festival opens with Shakespeare's "As You Like It," a charming romantic comedy set in the magical forest of Arden. The play tells the story of Rosalind, who has been banished from court and runs into the forest, disguising herself as a man. When Costume Designer David Israel Reynoso first started working with Director Jessica Stone on the costumes, the pair gravitated toward 18th-century costumes. They zeroed in on the early 1730s-40s, right before the Marie Antoinette era of extravagant costumes. "You get the amazing silhouettes and fabrics, but it's a more streamlined aesthetic," Reynoso told NBC7 San Diego. In total, several dozen elaborate costumes exist throughout the show. Reynoso said his costumes are more than decorative. He hopes the pieces help translate the words of The Bard, even when people may not fully understand what is going on onstage. "The success really is if the story is being told well and if people can walk away feeling like they understood things," Reynoso said. In these renderings from Costume Designer David Israel Reynoso, get a first look at the prestigious and magical world of Shakespeare's "As You Like It." The play runs at The Old Globe's outdoor theater from June 16 to July 21.
