When flames began engulfing the Oceanside Pier on April 25, first responders from more than a dozen agencies and organizations leaped into action to save the structure, and Wednesday the city gave thanks to all who acted.

Local leaders in Oceanside honored the first responders with a luncheon and explained how they saved the pier and lives too. NBC 7’s Kelvin Henry reports.

Investigators have ruled out arson as a possible cause of a fire that engulfed the far seaward end of Oceanside Pier last week, causing extensive damage and forcing an indefinite closure of the historic seafront landmark in the northwestern corner of San Diego County.

NBC 7’s Adonis Albright explains that the water contact closure near the Oceanside Pier has been lifted but that city workers were still putting up signs that say “keep out of water” the next morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard prepares extensively for fire fighting situations on their own — or sometimes other — vessels, but rarely on structures.

Within minutes, it became clear that the fire on the Oceanside Pier would require help from across the county. Many agencies stepped in, including the U.S. Coast Guard. NBC 7’s Dana Williams got an up-close look at how the crew on their cutter was able to save the pier.
