A student from Del Mar will represent San Diego County in June at the Scripps National Spelling Bee after winning a regional competition last week by properly spelling the word "nexus," the North County Times reported.

Alex Kahng, an eighth-grader at Earl Warren Middle School in Solana Beach, said he thought the winning word was pretty easy, although he's expecting more of a challenge at the national competition in Washington, D.C.

"Looking at past national competitions, I saw that they were very difficult," he told the paper.

Alex said he prepared for the regional competition by studying massive word lists and reading a lot. Now, he's focusing most of his energy on getting ready for the national event.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee is the largest such competition in the nation and has been held for more than 80 years.
