A major stretch of southbound Interstate 5 reopened Sunday afternoon following bridge repairs that were supposed to close lanes all weekend long, CalTrans San Diego said.

The state’s transportation department will close Interstate 5 through Downtown San Diego for two weekends in September to repair the bridge deck over state Route 163.

Caltrans officials announced Sunday that the construction of four remaining new miles of carpool lanes on northbound Interstate 5 between Carlsbad and Oceanside will be completed Monday.
