Bear Mountain and Snow Summit opened for business Saturday with nearby Mountain High getting the jump on them. The resort near Wrightwood cranked up its chairlifts on Thursday and made it a freebie for all active and retired military.

The recent Santa Ana events of the past two weeks may be keeping firefighters on edge but they make for ideal conditions for making snow, or, as it's called at the resorts, "blowing snow".

Clear, cold, dry nights are the perfect mix for the resort operators to work their magic, turning water into white, fluffy powder.

The two resorts at Big Bear and Mountain High don't have all their runs open but those that are open are covered with up to two feet of fresh, packed snow.  Lift lines are short and there are some bargains to be had in these first days of the new season.

Of course, way up the road, Mammoth Mountain also opened its doors this week after Mother Nature did some snow making of her own.
Mammoth has pretty good coverage and is about 50 percent open.
