Gahan and Gore’s (pictured) favorite artists include Siouxsie and the Banshees, Cabaret Voltaire, Talking Heads and Iggy Pop. On the band’s name, Gore said they took it from the French fashion magazine of the same name and “It means hurried fashion or fashion dispatch. I like the sound of that.”

Depeche Mode’s sound took a turn from the “industrial pop” sound they’d curated on early records with 1986’s “Black Celebration” and 87’s “Music For the Masses” — both of which featured darker themes both lyrically and musically.

“Violator” was the first Depeche Mode album to enter the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart thanks to the strength of two additional singles “Policy of Truth” and “World in My Eyes,” and ended up staying 74 weeks in the chart. It remains the band’s biggest-selling album to-date.
