Shinedown evolved out of the dissolution of Smith’s prior band Dreve, who had signed a record contract with Atlantic Records in 2000. Turned out, the label ended up dropping Dreve before releasing an album, but retained Smith — who they saw potential in.

They signed Smith to a development deal where Atlantic representatives would help him with his songwriting, and helped him recruit members for a new band. That band became Shinedown.
