The area around Naval Air Station North Island's main gate was put on lockdown Thursday after an unattended item was found at the nearby visitor center around 10 a.m., according to officials.

Residents who live across the street and in other areas near the main gate were evacuated with the help of the Coronado Police Dept., Naval Base Coronado Public Affairs Officer Angelique Dolan said.

A perimeter was set up around the visitor center, Dolan said. The items were identified as two unattended bags and were cleared by the Navy Explosive Ordnance Disposal team.

No one was being allowed in or out of the area and base traffic was being re-routed to gates 2 and 5. Pedestrians were being asked to use carrier gate (Gate 2). Outbound traffic on McCain Blvd. was also shut down.

There were no personnel injured or property damaged. The incident is being investigated.
