A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old fellow student.

According to investigators, the students attend San Marcos High School but the attacks took place off campus.

Detectives said the 16-year-old suspect could also be connected to the sexual assault of a 13-year-old girl in January 2008.

A 16-year-old boy has been arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old fellow student.

The victim in the most recent case told investigators she was assaulted on May 12 behind a strip mall that is across the street from the school. She came forward on Sept. 6.

"It's not uncommon for victims of rape to delay reporting for various reasons, and that's the case in this particular situation," detective Pete Carrillo said.

Once the boy was arrested, his name was connected to another alleged sexual assault in 2008. In that case, the victim did not pursue charges.

"The first case was followed up on, and at that time, that particular victim did not want to pursue the case, so at that point, it was suspended," Carrillo said.

The suspect was arrested for sexual assault, including rape by intoxication, according to investigators.

The San Marcos Unified School District put out a statement at the request of a reporter.

"The district was made aware of this incident on the day of the student's arrest," Superintendent Kevin Holt said. "Since that time, the student has not returned to campus."

Meanwhile, students leaving campus on Friday said they had not heard of the arrest.

"I'm kind of shocked to hear that a 16-year-old boy would do that to a girl," a female student said. "I'm kind of scared to walk alone. It's just weird."
