Bars, Restaurants Roll Out Drinks and Dishes Inspired by 2017 San Diego Comic-Con

As San Diego Comic-Con 2017 takes over the streets of downtown San Diego, local eateries are rolling out some colorful, limited-edition menu items fit for a superhero. Here’s a look at a few dishes and drinks inspired by the pop culture spectacular. Most are available July 20-23.

Cafe 222
They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day and Café 222 plans to make that meal super. The eatery, located at 222 Island Ave. in downtown’s Marina District, will whip up this colorful waffle dish inspired by Captain America during Comic-Con. The dish features golden brown malted waffles shaped like Captain America’s shield, topped with fresh berries and whipped cream for that patriotic red, white and blue look. The dish is on the kid’s menu, and available in limited quantities from July 19 to July 23.

Rounding out the cocktail selection at the Manchester Grand Hyatt is this green drink fitting dubbed “The Hulk.” It blends tequila with spinach, lime, lemon, agave nectar and white grape juice.

Searsucker San Diego
Searsucker San Diego in the Gaslamp District (611 Fifth Ave.) will pour a long list of cocktails during Comic-Con – all named after heroes in the pop culture and comic book realms. There’s “The Vulture,” which features El Silencio Mezcal, peach, lime and tarragon, and “The Last Jedi,” a mix of Bombay Gin, leopold apple, lime, ginger, plum bitters and lavender sprig. “The Imp’s Delight” combines Grey Goose with Lillet Blanc, apricot, passion, Cardamom Bitters, and mint, while “Daughter of Zeus” mixes house-infused strawberry jalapeno tequila with lime and Agave Cadillac. “The Riddler” features cucumber gin, bruised mint, lime and soda. Other cocktails on the list with cheeky, Comic-Con-inspired names: “Twilight Sparkle,” “Peter Rabbit,” “Hostage in Sakaar,” “Captain Underpants,” “Sequel to the Prequel’s Sequel,” “Commissioner Gordon,” and “Shape Shifter.”

The menu at Puesto in The Headquarters at Seaport (789 W. Harbor Dr.) includes a few Comic-Con-themed dishes including El Heroé Taco (The Hero, $9): filet mignon wrapped in crispy melted cheese, topped with Maine lobster claws, avocado, crispy onions and “Heroé Sauce.”

Also available at the Manchester Grand Hyatt, the “Deadpool”: cucumber vodka and Bloody Mary mix topped with celery, pepperoncini, blackened shrimp, bacon, olive and lime. This one is also $10.

Also on the menu at Puesto is “The Villain Taco” ($6), carne asada wrapped in crispy melted cheese, topped with pork adobo, avocado, crispy onions, cucumber crèma and cilantro.

Bleu Bohème, located at 4090 Adams Ave. in Kensington, will offer this “Femme Fatale” cocktail from July 19 to July 23, inspired by the charm and mystery of female superheroes and villains. The drink is made with Campari, Fernet, grapefruit juice, simple syrup and Monstarra Cava Brut.

Manchester Grand Hyatt/Sally's Fish House & Bar
Two words: Light-saber chopsticks. For $19.95 per pair, Sally’s Fish House & Bar in the Manchester Grand Hyatt will sell chopsticks that light up and look just like light-sabers from “Star Wars.” Never has playing with your food seemed more appropriate. The eatery will also offer a “Star Wars”-themed sushi menu.

Manchester Grand Hyatt/Grand Lobby Bar
At the Grand Lobby Bar inside the Manchester Grand Hyatt, hungry conventioneers can try the “Drax the Destroyer Burger,” which pays homage to the Marvel character of the same name. The big burger features angus beef with chorizo, bacon, pepper jack cheese, cheddar cheese, pickled onions, sliced tomato and cilantro aioli, on a sun-dried tomato bun. For $18, you can snag the burger and a Sam Adams Summer Ale.

Manchester Grand Hyatt
Over at the Manchester Grand Hyatt in downtown San Diego, 21+ fanboys and fangirls can sip on several cocktails inspired by movie, TV and comic book characters. This includes “The White Walker,” a nod to the otherworldly humanoid creature from the HBO series, “Game of Thrones.” The $10 drink features white rum mixed with coconut rum, shaken with pineapple juice, Tuaca and blue Curacao.

The Blind Burro will also offer this Mega Margarita ($16), with a little Comic-Con garnish, which features Milagro Silver, triple sec, fresh citrus and agave. The US GRANT
The US Grant, the historic downtown San Diego hotel located at 326 Broadway, is now offering tableside drinks mixed on a new lobby cocktail cart. During Comic-Con, the cart will serve the “Tohrren Square,” named after the major city square in “Game of Thrones.” The specialty cocktail combines scotch, sweet vermouth, cynar, essence of oak barrel and pastis and sells for $19.

The Bristol Hotel
The Bristol Hotel (1055 First Ave.) in downtown San Diego will offer this cocktail – “The Golden Lasso of Truth” ($10) – inspired by the “Wonder Woman” movie. The drink combines white rum, brandy, triple sec and lemon juice, topped with golden raw sugar and garnished with a candied twisted lemon peel. Other cocktails on the list: “The Steve Trevor” and “The Invisible Jet.”

Tajima Ramen
Anime fans, this Japanese fare is for you. Tajima in the East Village (901 E. St.) will offer bowls of “Naruto Ramen” ($10.50) during Comic-Con, themed for Anime devotees. This warm, savory dish boasts classic ingredients of Miso Ramen: pork chashu, Japanese seaweed, sesame seeds, green onion, and half a ramen egg, plus some of the ninja character Naruto’s favorites like bamboo shoots and Naruto fish cakes. This Comic-Con special will also be sold through July 23 at other Tajima locations: Hillcrest, Convoy Street, Mercury Street and North Park.
