The state budget crisis is now threatening to hit San Diego's transit system.

There's no such thing as a free ride -- except on MTS bus route # 880.

Several San Diego city councilmembers announced  two weeks of free bus rides to promote a bus route that is at risk of being cut.

The route 880 is an express bus route serving the communities of: 4-S Ranch, Rancho Bernardo, Mira Mesa, and Poway with service to Sorrento Valley and the Golden Triangle.

Councilmembers Sherri Lightner, Carl DeMaio, and Todd Gloria joined  Poway Councilmember Jim Cunningham saying the free rides are meant to attract additonal riders.

"We hope that a lot of people will take advantage of the free rides," said Lightner, "and realize how riding public transportation can help you save money, contribute to a healthy environment, actually more serenity in your own life and just have more time."

The free rides don't start until February 16.
