A family of four woke up to a violent robbery in their home. But the suspects and the victims could be in trouble for this case as the parents were growing marijuana in their home. Brandi Powell reports.
Officials believe two crimes that happened overnight could be connected.
The first incident happened around 11 p.m. Monday on the 8500-block of Hurlbut Street, a family was completely caught off guard when three men armed with guns forced themselves inside the family's home.
But police said the parents were growing marijuana inside the Serra Mesa home.
The suspects robbed the parents and two children at gunpoint. They then ransacked the house, taking cash and the marijuana growing inside the home, said officials.
“Obviously the occupants were overpowered and overcome with the force of the individuals, it was a total surprise,” said Paul Rorrison with the San Diego Police Department. “They came through the unlocked front door. All of them were armed.”
Then shortly after 4 a.m. one of the suspects was arrested at a Days Inn hotel after an incident on the 5300-block of Adobe Falls Road in Mission Valley.
Police did not specify what happened at the hotel, but witnesses saw around 20 police vehicles at the scene early Tuesday morning.
Officials said they are investigating the incident and will be asking the parents questions about the marijuana growth inside their home.
