Navy officials say a student from the U.S. Naval Academy has been charged with armed robbery, burglary, drug smuggling and other counts.

The Navy said yesterday that Midshipman Juan Domingo Alonso of Los Angeles was arrested June 10 when he was in San Diego for a summer training program.

The 24-year-old is accused of smuggling nearly 200 pounds of marijuana into the country from Mexico. Alonso is also accused of breaking into a house while armed with a shotgun and pistol and stealing 120 pounds of marijuana.

Alonso is being held in the brig at Miramar Marine Corps Air Station. Officials say he will face an investigative hearing in the coming weeks.
