The man who filled the radio airwaves in San Diego during the 50s, 60s, and into the 70s died Monday morning.

KOGO radio confirmed Tuesday morning that Martin, who was know to fans as the Happy Hare, passed away on Monday. He was 81.

Martin was so popular as a morning DJ that he rode in parades and, had he not stepped in to stop, may have been elected mayor, all because of an on-air joke.

Martin was known as the Voice of San Diego. He was working as late as last year.

  • Shaune Steele Wednesday, Jan 7 at 6:00 PM FLAG COMMENT When I was growing up in Crown Point, I listened to Happy Hare every morning on KCBQ as I got ready for school. Although I was just a kid, I recognized that he was someone special! A real pro, and from all accounts a hell of a guy. Rest in Peace, Happy Hare.
  • JACK HAYES Wednesday, Jan 7 at 5:13 PM FLAG COMMENT I followed Harry at KCBQ back in the sixties on the morning show. He was an incredible gentleman -- a truly class act. RIP Harry.
  • Bobby Rich Wednesday, Jan 7 at 3:54 PM FLAG COMMENT He was one of the few true originals and he inspired many more to be their own version. You can read tons of Hare's memories on line... http://happyhareonline.com/
