The Santee YMCA that was recently at the center of controversy reopened its redesigned locker rooms Tuesday after a month-long remodel.

The project, which included the installation of privacy stalls, came after a teen girl claimed she felt unsafe when near a transgender woman in the locker room.

Chrystinne Wood got a rousing applause from supporters during the  Santee City Council meeting on Wednesday after the 66-year–old transgender mother shared the agony she says she’s suffered from what she calls a manufactured incident by a teenage girl.

NBC 7’s Omari Fleming was at the city council meeting and heard the peak of the drama.

The YMCA in Santee will close again Saturday as another protest is set to take place over its transgender policy after a 17-year-old complained to the city council she saw a transgender woman in the locker room. NBC 7 spoke with the woman who said she was surprised at the controversy but also encouraged by some of the reactions.
