Man Run Over in El Cajon After Spat, Police Say

A driver deliberately ran over a man after the female passenger in the car got into a fight with the victim's girlfriend, police said.

The incident happened around 1:20 p.m. at the intersection of East Madison Avenue and North First Street when Michelle Bergen, 29, of Lakeside got out of the car and assaulted another woman she previously knew, El Cajon Police Department (ECPD) Sgt. Jason Taub said.

After the victim fled the scene with her boyfriend, Bergen got back into the car and the driver, David Dunkel, deliberately drove his car onto the sidewalk, striking the victim's boyfriend, Taub said.

After hitting the male victim, the Dunkel, 37, of Lakeside, then crashed into a power pole.

Angela Matus, who lives in the apartment complex where the incident happened, described the scene as crazy. She was came rushing outside when she heard the loud crash.

"I came outside and this guy, who ran over the whole fence, was stuck over there, crashed into a pole," Matus said.

Only after seeing the car crashed, she saw the two victims

"It's crazy because it's like this guy seemed like he tried to kill him," she said.

The female victim was able to avoid being hit by the car, Taub said.

Clothes could be seen strewn across the street. It was unknown what the relationship between the suspects and victims was.

The victim, as well as Bergan and Dunkel, were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital with moderate injuries, Taub said.

Once the two suspects are released from the hospital, they will be booked into jail and charged with two counts of attempted homicide, he said.

It was unclear what led up to the initial assault and police are still conducting an investigation. Anyone with information about the incident was urged to call the El Cajon Police Department at (619) 579-3300 or anonymously at Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477 or sdcrimestoppers.org
