The Padres selected 16 position players and 14 pitchers through the first two days of the MLB draft.
We've learned something very important about the Padres: They're going to be a heck of a lot more athletic in a few years.
While the previous regime under Sandy Alderson was focused on high on-base percentage guys who weren't necessarily great players, Jeff Moorad likes to put athletes on the field who know how to play exciting baseball. Their first two picks on Tuesday were arguably the two best high school outfielders in this year's class (Donavan Tate and Everett Williams; both graded as Top 25 talents). Even last year, there's no way the Padres would have taken players like that.
On Wednesday, rounds 4-30 were completed. This time the focus shifted to pitchers, including Santana High School right-hander James Needy. Overall, the Padres have chosen 16 position players and 14 pitchers with their first 30 picks. Here's the complete, round-by-round list:
Donavan Tate - OF - Cartersville HS
Everett Williams - OF - McCallum HS
Jerry Sullivan - RHP - Oral Roberts University
Keyvius Sampson - RHP - Forest HS
Jason Hagerty - C - University of Miami
James Needy - RHP - Santana HS
Miles Mikolas - RHP - Nova Southeastern University
