Palomar Health announced a collaboration with the Mayo Clinic on Wednesday. NBC 7's Sherene Tagharobi reports.

Palomar doctors will have access to more knowledge, resources, and tools through the Mayo Clinic network.

Hospital officials say that instead of having to travel to Scottsdale or Rochester for a consult, Palomar patients will benefit from the expertise of Mayo physicians without ever having to leave Escondido.

Mayo has 22 partnerships like this one but this is the first in California. The hospital’s network includes 4,000+ staff physicians as well as experts in every field and sub field.

If someone has a very rare disease or condition, that expertise will be especially valuable to Palomar physicians and their patients.

However, Mayo doctors will not travel here to perform surgeries or treatments.

They will simply be a resource to Palomar through several electronic tools including eConsults and AskMayoExpert.

Palomar says this is not about the name but rather bettering care in this community.

Mayo says it’s a way to continue to expand and grow.

Palomar Health has several facilities, including hospitals in Escondido and Poway, a nursing facility in Poway and Palomar Health expresscare clinics in Escondido, Rancho Penasquitos, San Elijo Hills and Temecula.
