Twitter More Addictive Than Alcohol, Cigarettes: Study

Chicago University interviewed 205 people between 18 and 85.

As the robots would say, "Resistance is futile!" A new study fresh out of Chicago University's Booth Business School claims that Twitter and email are harder to resist than drinking and smoking. Agree or disagree?

In a wild experiment featuring 205 people between the ages of 18 and 85, the school pinged participants seven times a day to see what type of desires they had and at what times.

As it turns out, as the day goes on, willpower is severely diminished. That's cool, after all, most people are more apt to drink or smoke after a stressing day of work.

But apparently, there was little desire for tobacco, alcohol and coffee. Shocker! And more desire for 140-character messages?!?

The experiment's team leader Wilhelm Hofmann believes "Desires for media may be comparatively harder to resist because of their high availability and also because it feels like it does not 'cost much' to engage in these activities, even though one wants to resist."

Summarized, it means — you, yes you — stop reaching for that smartphone or tablet and tweeting so much. You don't need to be a 140-character spitting machine all day. Give your thumbs and fingers some rest.
