Tuesday is the final day to vote in the election to fill the vacant seat in San Diego County's Fourth Supervisorial District.

When is the District 4 Supervisor Special Election?

Election Day for the District 4 Supervisor Special Election is on Aug. 15, 2023, but some polls have been open since Aug. 5 and voters have been able to vote by mail since July 16. Only those registered to vote in District 4 will be eligible to vote in the election.

Who are the candidates for San Diego County District 4 Supervisor?

The candidates are:

  • Democrat Monica Montgomery Steppe, San Diego City Council president pro tem
  • Democrat Janessa Goldbeck, Marine veteran and nonprofit organizer
  • Republican Amy Reichert, founder of Reopen San Diego
  • Republican Paul McQuigg, Marine veteran

The successful candidate will fill the seat for the remainder of the current term ending in January 2027.

If no candidate receives a majority vote, a special general election will be held on Nov. 7.

Why is there a Special Election?

The Board of Supervisors seat was vacated by former Supervisor Nathan Fletcher when he stepped down following what he describes as an "inappropriate relationship" with a subordinate.The woman in question has alleged sexual assault and harassment, but Fletcher has denied those claims.

Where can I vote for the District 4 Supervisor Special Election?

Several vote centers have been open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. since Aug. 5. They are:

  • Cuyamaca College Performing Arts Center, 900 Rancho San Diego Parkway, Lot 1, El Cajon
  • Encanto VFW Post #1512, 6873 Federal Blvd.; Lemon Grove
  • North Park Recreation Center meeting room, 4044 Idaho St., San Diego
  • Columbus Club of San Diego assembly hall, 4425 Home Ave., San Diego
  • Father Junipero Serra Hall, 2540 San Diego Ave., San Diego
  • North Clairemont Recreation Center meeting room 2, 4421 Bannock Ave., San Diego
  • Skyline Hills Branch Library multipurpose room, 7900 Paradise Valley Road, San Diego

Can I vote by mail?

Anyone registered to vote in District 4 will receive a mail-in ballot that can be returned through the U.S. Postal Service. The ballot must be postmarked by Aug. 15 and voters should make sure to sign their ballot to ensure their vote is counted.

How do I know if I'm in the 4th District?

District 4 encompasses Lemon Grove, La Mesa, Clairemont (Bay Park, Bay Ho, Clairemont Mesa, North Clairemont), Hillcrest, Balboa Park, North Park, Bankers Hill, Old Town, Mission Hills, Normal Heights, University Heights, Oak Park, Webster, Valencia Park, Encanto, Bay Terraces, Paradise Hills, Skyline, Kearney Mesa, Linda Vista, Birdland, Serra Mesa, Civita, portions of Grantville, City Heights, Rolando, Azalea Park, Chollas Creek, Rolando Park, Kensington-Talmadge, Mid-City, Montezuma Mesa, SDSU Mission Valley, Crest โ€“ Dehesa, Spring Valley, Casa de Oro & Mt Helix, Rancho San Diego, according to the county.
