Driver Killed in I-5 Rollover Near La Jolla

Two other cars including a DeLorean crashed into the truck sitting in the middle of southbound Interstate 5

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating a collision that closed two local highways for hours.

The driver of a pickup truck died when he drove off the transition ramp between La Jolla and the southbound Interstate 5 around 1:30 a.m. Friday.

The Chevy pickup went off the embankment, rolled over multiple times before landing the wrong way on the highway below.

Two other cars including a DeLorean collided with the truck.

The driver of the pickup, identified as Regino Miranda III, 27, of San Diego, died in the crash.

DeLorean owner Joel McClure said he was driving down the highway when he saw the wreckage in the middle of the road.

He swerved and tried to correct and rear-ended another car in front of him.

His car sustained significant damage but the engine still runs.

“Classic car. Stainless steel,” McClure said. “She’ll survive."

The accident closed I-5 and State Route 52 for several hours while CHP officers investigated.

No one else was injured in the crash.
