Pedestrian Struck, Killed by Amtrak Train in Del Mar

The woman, for unknown reasons, walked past the signal guards at the intersection and was struck by the northbound train

A woman died after being struck by a northbound Amtrak Pacific Surfliner train in Del Mar on Sunday, authorities said.

The accident happened a little before 10 a.m. at the intersection of 15th Street and Coast Boulevard, San Diego County sheriff's Deputy Tyler Eikermann said.

The woman walked past the signal guards at the intersection and was struck by the Pacific Surfliner train 769 heading to San Luis Obispo, an Amtrak spokeswoman said.

The train traveling approximately 48 mph when it struck the woman, Eikermann said. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene, he said.

There were no injuries to the 229 passengers and crew on board and the train was delayed for about two hours, Amtrak spokeswoman Beth K. Toll said. 

It was unclear why the woman crossed the tracks. The cause of the accident is under investigation.

About 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide each year, according to Amtrak.
