Dozens of Firefighters Called to Restaurant Fire in Del Mar

A fire may have sparked in the kitchen of a Del Mar restaurant, sending damaging smoke throughout the family-owned business Thursday morning, firefighters said.

More than three dozen fire personnel were called at about 4:30 a.m. to the fire at the Taste of Thai restaurant off San Andres Drive near Via de la Valle.

Crews with San Diego Fire-Rescue, Solana Beach and Encinitas fire departments had the fire subdued within an hour but some light smoke could still be seen rising from the family-owned restaurant.

Mark Habbestad, the family-owned restaurant's co-owner, arrived as crews were tending to hot spots.

"My best friend told me that he was driving past at about 4:30 a.m. and saw smoke and he swore it was this restaurant. I didn’t believe it," he said.

Firefighters at the scene believe the blaze started in the restaurant's kitchen before spreading into the attic though the cause of the fire was not yet known. A fire investigator was called to the scene.
