Firefighters were working to salvage items that were badly damaged in a church fire in Old Town on Monday morning.
Smoke and flames were seen pouring from a second story window at the Old Town Community Church on Congress Street at about 8.40 a.m., according to firefighters.
The fire was knocked down quickly.
“We were really aggressive on this. I think it took us about ten minutes to actually knock the fire down,” said Capt. Tim Connect.
But the damage was already done.
“The damage itself looks like it was isolated to one area where the musical instruments were, the stage area, but there’s extensive smoke damage throughout the structure,” said Connect.
Firefighters were pulling out items that burned and trying to salvage as much as they could.

“Talking about the Bible, we understand what is important to people and those are the things that we’re going to pull out and try to save so they don’t get further damaged,” said Connect.
Congress Street was shut down between Arista Street and Conde Street, according to firefighters.
No injuries have been reported.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
