Water Narcs Wanted

Residents asked to 'yellow tag' their water wasting neighbors

Watch out water wasters, the water police are about to rat you out and they're your neighbors. Or, if you have the nerve, it can be you.

San Diego County residents are being asked to be on the lookout for water wasters. The two major county newspapers are distributing bright yellow door hangers. The hangers can then be placed on the doors of offenders.

The hangers have this message: "Dear Neighbor, our region is facing a serious water shortage. This makes eliminated water waste more important than ever. While passing your home, I noticed the following:"

There are five offenses that can be checked off on the tags:

1. Your sprinklers are watering the pavement.

2. Your sprinklers were on during the rain.

3. You have a broken sprinkler, and/or your irrigation system is leaking.

4. Your sprinklers are on every day.

5. Your sprinklers are on during the day.

The tags also include water saving tips. You can sign the tag or leave it anonymous.

The water authority is spending $68,000 to distribute almost two million door hangers. The tags were distributed in packs of five over the weekend in the  San Diego Union-Tribune. Next weekend, the North County Times will do the same. The tags are also available from the water authority's web site.
