Incumbent Dave Roberts Takes Early Lead Against Challenger Kristin Gaspar in Battle for 3rd District

Incumbent Supervisor Dave Roberts took an early lead in the nail-biting County of Supervisors race the day after the election.

Incumbent Supervisor Dave Roberts took 51 percent of the vote with 100 percent of the precincts reporting at 10:18 a.m. His challenger from the June runoff election, Encinitas Mayor Kristin Gaspar, took 49 percent.

Fewer than three thousand votes separated Roberts from Gaspar.

Roberts has been in his seat since 2012 when he beat out Republican Steve Danon, former chief of staff to Congressman Brian Bilbray. Roberts replaced Pam Slater-Price who retired after 20 years on the board.

Roberts, a former Solana Beach mayor, is the only current Democrat on the Board of Supervisors, representing the countyโ€™s third district.

Kristin Gaspar, a republican, has served as the mayor of Encinitas since 2014, and before that was a member of the Encinitas City Council.

Gaspar started a physical therapy firm with her husband in 2002 and has watched its patient base grow to over 6,500, according to her campaign website.

The third district runs from northern San Diego up the coast to Encinitas and includes Escondido, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch, Carmel Mountain and Tierrsanta.

Editor's Note: A previous version of this story said Roberts defeated his incumbent. Mail-in ballots are still being counted.
