Field of Dreams May Come Down

A backyard baseball field is in trouble

"We're out here together almost every day," says Jonathan Weisz.

Weisz is talking about his backyard and his three sons.  The backyard is a regulation size little league field.  From real grass, and dirt to a raised pitcher's mound, it has everything.  Everything, but a permit.

The city council issued Weisz a letter, and is threatening to make him tear out the field.  Council members opposed to the project say it should be classified as a recreation area, and therefore, would need a permit.

Weisz said he believes the project does not need the permission.  He says it's only used as a practice field.  There are no lights or electricity, and the grass is watered from a well, not city water.

"This is a lot, and the lot was filled with weeds, and we put in grass and dirt." he said.

Still, he says, if the council decides a permit is necessary, and will still issue one, he's more than happy to pay for it.

Weisz says he got his neighbors to sign a petition giving him permisson to build the field before construction began.

Councilman Jim Cunningham said he supports the field.  Cunningham said they will wait until an empty seat on the council is filled before voting on the issue, which would likely be sometime this summer.
