A 5-year and 2-year veteran of the San Diego Sheriff's Department (SDSO) who opened fire on a possible DUI driver at the end of a pursuit across North County were identified Wednesday.
The incident began in Vista Friday at about 8:45 p.m. when deputies tried to pull over 21-year-old Jose Trujillo of San Marcos on suspicion of DUI.
Trijullo took off, SDSO said.
Deputies and California Highway Patrol officers tailed the driver on westbound State Route 78 and then southbound Interstate 5, at times at speeds over 100 miles per hour, SDSO Lt. Anthony Dupree said.
At one point during the pursuit, the driver called 911 and told the dispatcher he had a loaded 9MM handgun, a female was in the car with him and he wanted to commit "suicide-by-cop," SDSO said.
SDSO said the woman was dropped off in Leucadia during the pursuit.
Trujillo continued on and exited at Carmel Valley Road in Del Mar Heights where he drove off the road and became stuck in the Los Penasquitos Lagoon.
He exited the car and advanced on deputies, according to SDSO.
"The suspect kept his right hand behind his back and at one point quickly pointed something at the deputies while taking a shooting stance," SDSO Lt. Anthony Dupree said in a release.

SDSO said at that's when Deputy Frank McRoberts, a five-year veteran, and Deputy Nicholas Jehl, a two-year veteran, shot the driver in the upper torso.
Witnesses reported hearing four or five shots.
The driver was taken into custody and transported to the hospital. Trujillo's current condition was not known.
Upon release, he will be charged with felony evading arrest and driving under the influence, Dupree said.
The San Diego Police Department Homicide unit is investigating the officers involved in the shooting.
