An oncoming Uber driver and bicyclist collided on a busy Hillcrest street Monday afternoon, leaving the bicyclist with major injuries, San Diego police said.
The crash happened in the 1600 block of University Avenue around 5:30 p.m., just off State Route 163.
Jonathon Rutledge Washington, 24, was riding a motorized bicycle while his friend, Tommie Brown was standing up on the pegs of the bike.
They were making a left from University Avenue onto Centre Street when they were hit head-on with by the vehicle.
Brown told NBC 7, he managed to jump free just before the collision.
"I thought he was dead for a second because he wasn't moving,” Brown said, describing his friend Washington moments after the crash.
Washington suffered major injuries and was taken to a Scripps Mercy Hospital for treatment, said police.
"His eye was shut, he was bleeding from his mouth. All the blood in the street is from his mouth and his face," Brown said.
Police said alcohol or speeding was not a factor in the crash.
"I wish something anything we could have changed the timeline so this one incident didn't happen," Brown said.
The Uber driver, Rashedi Vedad stayed at the scene and did cooperate with police.
Vedad and his passenger were not injured.
San Diego Police officers described the bike involved as "homemade" - a bicycle with a motor attached to it.
No further information was immediately available.
