1 Person Dead, Children Injured in Crash in Chula Vista: CVPD

One person has died and four others, including children, were injured in a crash involving a construction truck Monday in Chula Vista, the Chula Vista Police Department confirmed.

The construction truck caused a chain-reaction crash at about 1:10 p.m. on Fourth Avenue near Shasta Street.

The construction truck hit a black pick-up truck causing the pick-up truck to hit a man walking in the street, killing him, CVPD said. The victim was identified as an 81-year-old man.

Police said two children were inside or near the black pick-up truck when it was hit and were taken to area hospitals with minor injuries. Their mother, who was on the sidewalk near the truck, was injured by flying debris from the crash and was also taken to the hospital.

Family members say the mother and her husband were loading their kids, an 8-year-old and a 15-month-old, into the truck when the collision happened.

The parents had a room for rent, and say the 81-year-old man was coming to their house to look at the room. The man and the parents had recently exchanged contact information online.

Family memebrs say the 8-year-old girl had some bruising on her head, nose and legs. They also said she had a hard time remembering the crash and will have to be taken to the hospital again on Tuesday.

The person driving the construction truck appeared to be OK and is cooperating with officials. Police have not said whether drugs or alcohol played a role in the collision.
