A motorcyclist is lucky to be alive after a fiery crash that happened in the southbound lanes of State Route 163 Monday.

California Highway Patrol officers are investigating the cause of the crash just after 2 a.m.

The motorcycle rider told witnesses a car hit him and drove off.

He was able to get to the shoulder of the highway.

Paramedics transported the cyclist to a local hospital for treatment but he appeared to be okay.

We spoke with one witness who saw the downed motorcyclist, stopped to help and called 911.

“Shortly after another car hit the bike, the bike caught on fire and it turned into a pretty big mess,” said Jorge Palomo.

The accident triggered two more crashes as people tried to avoid the debris in the road.

One vehicle involved had children inside. They were taken to the side of the road for safety.
