Most people have seen Bird and Lime scooters sweeping across San Diego. Now the company, Razor, will be offering dockless e-scooter rentals as well.
Razor gave out free helmets at a pop-up shop in downtown San Diego Thursday on Market Street and Harbor Drive to anyone who downloaded their app.
"There's been some controversy with the number of scooters in the city," said Kelly Berger, a brand marketer for Razor Scooters. "What's really important to us is that people have fun but be safe."
Berger said Razor scooters go up to 15 mph. Unlike other scooters, the company charges all of them instead of paying people to do it.
Berger said the company designed the scooters to be safer.
"The board is a little bigger," said Berger. "The tires are a bit more sturdy."
Right now it is mandatory to wear a helmet when riding electric scooters, but that could soon change with new legislation.
A bill passed Wednesday would allow adults to ride motorized scooters without a helmet in California.
The bill now awaits Governor Jerry Brown's signature to become state law. Scooter company, Bird, backed the proposal.
