You Had Me at ‘Freeze'

NEWPORT BEACH  -- Police say Leigh Steinberg, a prominent sports agent who helped inspire the movie "Jerry Maguire," has been arrested in Newport Beach for investigation of being drunk in public.

Police Lt. Bill Hartford says Steinberg, 59, was taken into custody on Oct. 22 by police who got a report about a man screaming and attempting to climb a hill. Police say officers detected a strong odor of alcohol and his speech was slurred although no alcoholic beverages were found.

A message left for Steinberg was not immediately returned.

Hartford did not know whether police had submitted a complaint to the Orange County district attorney's office, which would file the misdemeanor criminal charge.

Steinberg has represented sports stars such as boxer Oscar de la Hoya and football quarterbacks Troy Aikman and Steve Young.

The arrest was first reported Friday in The Orange County Register
