On Deck: Foam Rises to the Top

On Deck is FanHouse's look at the day's most intriguing baseball matchups.

Houston Astros (47-56) at Milwaukee Brewers (60-44) 2:05 PM ET

The addition of CC Sabathia was supposed to give the Brewers a chance to catch the Cubs in the N.L. Central by the end of the season. Their ascension has been much quicker ... as a 9-1 run combined with the Cubs going 3-7 in their last ten has but the Brewers in a deadlock for first with Chicago. To think that Ned Yost was once the guy we thought was on the hot seat. We were probably right, but it's how a well-timed trade will cool down that seat.

Florida Marlins (55-49) at Chicago Cubs (60-44) - 2:20 PM ET

What goes up, doesn't necessarily have to come down in the world of baseball ... but the Cubs sure are with that latest 3-7 slide, punctuated by two losses to the Marlins that oddly enough came on scores of 3-2, and more oddly were both won by Justin Miller. I'm not sure what that means other than the Cubs should probably think about scoring some more runs. Against Rick VandenHurk and his 6.10 season ERA, there's no excuse not to.

Goose Gossage Hall of Fame Induction - 1:30 PM ET

Yeah, Yankees vs. Red Sox is always a key matchup on the schedule. But why not take a day to remember those Yankees vs. Red Sox games of yore, and take a trip down memory lane as Goose Gossage is inducted into baseball's Hall of Fame. You may choose to remember those Yankee days where he helped re-invent the role of the closer. You may remember him as a Padre when he helped San Diego to their first ever World Series appearance. You may even remember a few months ago when he blastedJoba Chamberlain's and Jose Reyes' on-field celebrations. Whatever you remember, surely Gossage will wax poetic about it in his induction speech.
