Census: Detroit Population Plummets 25%

The city life isn’t cutting it for many families that once called major metropolises like Atlanta, Chicago and Cleveland home. But Detroit has been hit the hardest, losing a staggering amount of its middle-class African American population to the suburbs, The Wall Street Journal reports. Over the past decade, Detroit has lost around 25% of its population, or approximately one resident leaving every 20 minutes. "People are still looking to move out for safety and services," Kurt Metzger, a collector of Detroit's Census data, told the Journal. Over 860,00 jobs have been lost since 2000, with unemployment rates continually being among the nation’s highest.
