An SUV drifted into the center divider on Interstate 8 near Alpine Monday and rolled over, ejecting a toddler out onto the highway.
The driver of the red 2001 Ford Explorer drifted into the dirt separating the westbound lanes from oncoming traffic at East Willows Road.
When emergency crews arrived just before noon, the SUV was on its roof and the three adults inside the vehicle were injured.
“During the rollover, the 2-year-old child was fully ejected from the vehicle into the center divider,” said CHP Officer Kevin Pearlstein.
The girl suffered serious and was transported to Rady Children’s Hospital officials said.
It appears all the occupants were unrestrained at the time of the crash, Pearlstein said. There was a child seat in the vehicle but investigators aren't sure if the girl was in the seat at the time of the crash.
The driver, a 28-year-old woman from Campo, was traveling approximately 70 mph. Investigators aren’t sure what caused the SUV to drift into the center divide.

The two adult passengers included a 29-year-old man and a 50-year-old woman, both from Campo. The woman was partially ejected, officials said.
The adults were said to have suffered life-threatening injuries and were transported to Sharp Memorial Hospital.
The collision is under investigation, and it appears alcohol and or drugs were not a factor, CHP officials said.
