Chula Vista Officer Stabbed, Suspect Killed

A Chula Vista police officer was stabbed multiple times after responding to the call of a fight between neighbors Tuesday night.

David Scott, 27, the man accused of stabbing the officer, was shot and killed, officials said.

The incident occurred at 10:28 p.m. on Monterey Avenue near E James Street, according to the Chula Vista Police Department.

When the officer arrived at the scene, Scott allegedly charged at the officer with a knife. The officer fired his weapon in self-defense, Chula Vista police officials said.

The injured officer, who was stabbed four to six times in the head and in the arm, was taken to UC San Diego Hospital in Hillcrest.

The officer received stitches and did not have to undergo surgery, according to CVPD Captain Vern Sallee.

Sallee said police were called by a man around 9 p.m. who reported a neighbor had thrown a piece of concrete over the fence, which hit him in the shoulder.

Sallee said when two officers approached the neighbor's house, they were invited inside by Scott's mother. That's when police say Scott unexpectedly began attacking one of the officers.

"The officer initially thought the suspect was punching him, but quickly realized he was being stabbed by the suspect," officials said in a written news release.

The officer being stabbed used his handgun to shoot the Scott, according to the department news release.

A neighbor told NBC 7, he heard at least four shots--one shot, a pause and then three more shots. He said he also heard a woman screaming "help me, help me" from inside the home.

He said he was going to call 911 but then heard the police sirens.

Another officer and a department chaplain who was on a civilian ride-along helped the officer.

“This just shows how dangerous the job can be. Showing up to a residence to handle a dispute between neighbors and a suspect running at you and stabbing you. Obviously, a danger officers have when they go to these type of calls,” said CVPD Lt Dan Peak.

Officers put up caution tape blocking off the street while detectives request a search warrant to enter the home.

The neighborhood is located west of Interstate 805 and south of East J Street.
