Oceanside may soon have two medicinal marijuana delivery services operating within city limits.
On Wednesday, the council approved an ordinance to allow for two licenses for non-storefront retailers selling medicinal marijuana by delivery only. The motion was approved 3-2 with councilmembers Jack Feller and Esther Sanchez dissenting.
The storefront shall not be considered a medical marijuana dispensary, according to the city attorney.
In approving the ordinance, the city identified an industrial zoning area where these retailers may operate.
The next time is for the city to open the applications where people can apply for one of the two M-Type 9 Non-storefront Retailer licenses, which could happen as early as the next city council meeting on Sept. 19.
Approval for the licenses, however, could take months, if not years because of the arduous regulatory requirements.
Proposition 64 was approved by California voters in November 2016 and the legalization of recreational marijuana took effect on January 1, 2018.

Even so, recreational pot stores are banned in the city of Oceanside.
There is a petition drive underway to put recreational marijuana on the ballot in 2020.
