Little Italy Pursuit Ends in Head-On Crash

Witnesses said the suspect ran through a glass door

A police chase through Little Italy resulted in a head-on collision Friday morning.

Harbor police said the pursuit began when the driver of a stolen Jeep ran a red light near India and Hawthorne Streets at about 10 a.m.

Witnesses said the suspect was traveling the wrong way on Kettner. The suspect then collided with a truck on Kettner Blvd. between Juniper and Kalmia. The driver of the truck was not injured.

At that point, witnesses said the suspect got out of his car and ran into a glass door at a nearby furniture store.

Police found him hiding behind a dumpster. He was arrested soon after and taken to UCSD Medical Center with cuts on his face. It is not clear whether the cuts came from the Jeep's airbags or from the glass of the door he ran through.

The suspect faces charges of automobile theft and evading arrest but has not been identified yet, said an official with the Harbor Police Department.

The Port of San Diego's Harbor Police have arrested a suspected car thief after he failed to stop for a red light, led police on a pursuit and crashed into a vehicle.

At about 10 a.m. on Friday, June 8, a Harbor Police officer first witnessed the suspect run a red light on India Street at Hawthorn Street in San Diego. The officer initiated a traffic stop, but the suspect fled. After pursuing the vehicle for a few blocks, the suspect turned onto Kettner Boulevard, going the wrong way into oncoming traffic, at which point Harbor Police terminated the pursuit.

The suspect collided with a pickup truck, fled his vehicle and attempted to run into a nearby business, police said. He tried to enter the business but crashed through a glass window. He then hid behind a dumpster in a parking lot, but was quickly discovered and arrested. He was then transported by paramedics to UCSD Medical Center.
