A national regatta tour recently sailed in to San Diego.
With large gusts of wind and the open Pacific Ocean visible from nearly everywhere, it is no wonder the 2016 Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta took place in San Diego.
The second stop on the regatta’s North American tour began midday Friday at the San Diego Yacht Club with small boat races taking place in San Diego harbor. The event was also hosted by the Coronado Yacht Club, which is from where large classes of boats raced on Saturday and Sunday.
The large classes were competing past Point Loma, making it more difficult for spectators to watch from land.
“If you can’t watch it, be a part of it,” exclaimed Dave Reed, editor of Sail World Magazine. “Reach out to local sailing schools and communities so you can learn to sail yourself or take boat out to watch.”
San Diego is known as one of the best places to sail in the world which brings a regatta like this one back year after year. This year’s NOOD regatta seems to be drawing slightly bigger competition, including several world champion sailors.
"What is good about the event this year is we have a lot more activity. It shows the draw of San Diego," explained Reed.
