Raging Bar Fire Sparked by Arsonist

A raging fire that destroyed a bar in Memorial overnight was sparked by an arsonist, said firefighters.

The flames broke out just after 2 a.m. at Malenas Bar on National Avenue. When firefighters got there, smoke was coming through the roof.

It took at least 55 firefighters about half an hour to knock down the flames. “ The damage is quite extensive, potentially a total loss. The roof is starting to sag,” said San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesperson Maurice Luque.

No one was inside when firefighters got there and no injuries have been reported.

As soon as it's safe, investigators will move in to determine the cause.

Damage was estimated at $500,000 to the building and another $250,000 to the contents, said firefighters.
