1 Killed in Oceanside Crash: PD

Hutch Hutchinson, 67, died in the rollover crash Friday on eastbound SR-76 near Singh Road, east of Melrose Drive

A Fallbrook resident who lost control of his van Friday in Oceanside was killed in a rollover crash off State Route 76, authorities confirmed.

The deadly collision happened just before 1 p.m. on eastbound SR-76 near Singh Road, east of Melrose Drive. Officials with the Oceanside Police Department (OPD) and Oceanside Fire Department were the first to arrive at the scene of the rollover.

According to the police department, Hutch Hutchinson, 67, was driving alone in his 1996 GMC Safari Van when, for unknown reasons, he crossed the left emergency lane and struck the dividing wall of east and westbound SR-76.

Investigators said the van kept going until it veered onto the right shoulder. Hutchinson then overcorrected to the left, crossing two lanes. He then made a sharp right, causing his van to skid and flip, rolling over in the dirt off the right shoulder.

As the GMC rolled, Hutchinson was ejected from the vehicle. Eventually, the van came to rest in a small ravine off the freeway, officials said.

Hutchinson died at the scene. No one else was injured.

One lane of SR-76 was closed off to traffic for several hours following the accident.

The OPD said the crash remains under investigation. At this point, it is unknown if alcohol was a factor in the deadly collision. Anyone who witnessed the crash can reach out to the OPD at (760) 435-4911.
