Hazmat Incident Reported at YMCA Pool in Kearny Mesa

Officials said four people were exposed to water that was too acidic

Two children and a pair of lifeguards were hospitalized after being exposed to chemicals at a YMCA  pool  in Kearny Mesa Saturday afternoon, officials with the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department confirmed.

The incident was reported just after 12:30 p.m. at the Toby Wells YMCA located at 5105 Overland Drive, according to Maurice Luque, Public Information Officer for SDFD.

The incident reportedly occurred in one of the location's smaller pools with a water slide.

According to Luque, Hazmat crews and firefighters responded to the scene.

It was determined that the water in the pool was too acidic, which was caused by chlorine being mixed with other chemicals.

Luque said the issue was a mechanical error.

In all, four people were affected by fumes from the water including two children-- a brother and sister -- and two female lifeguards.

All four of those exposed to the fumes were taken to an area hospital. They were all treated and released.

The Department of Environmental Health was notified of the incident.

SDFD officials asked the YMCA to drain the pool and determine what went wrong with the mechanical system.

An employee at the Toby Wells YMCA  told NBC 7 San Diego the pool would remain closed for the rest of the day.
