A large tree fell in a community park in the heart of Coronado Wednesday.

A loud crack was heard before the Italian stone pine tree fell to the ground in the middle of Spreckels Park at approximately 5:15 p.m.

"It was like tilting down and then you could see it a little bit tilted and then it just fell down. like 10 minutes after it was tilted," said student Jameson Fabiszak told NBC 7. "It was like a boom sound and then you could see dust come up from the ground."

Firefighters rushed to the side of the park along Orange Avenue to check and make sure no one was injured by the weight of the massive tree or its branches.

No one was near the tree at the time it fell, according to the City Manager’s Office.

The 8-acre park is the site of community events like concerts in the park and is often used by families celebrating birthdays.

At the time the tree fell, there was a children’s birthday party underway in another section of the park, one witness told NBC 7.

Janine Zuniga with the City Manager’s Office said officials would investigate what caused the large tree to suddenly fall.

There's no official word on the size of the tree but, judging from images, it appears to be at least 100 feet tall.

The city says the tree is an Italian Stone Pine and estimates it's between 70 and 80 years old.

The tree was deemed healthy following an inspection earlier this year, according to the city. Coronado will reinspect all of the trees in the park.

The city is using a third party arborist to examine the root system and ultimately find out why this tree fell down. that examination takes about a week.

Grounds crews were at the park Thursday chopping the tree into pieces and running them through a wood chipper.
