2 Found Dead After Deputies Kill Man

Sheriff's deputies shot and killed a man who confronted them with a rifle outside a San Diego County home, then found a man and woman dead of gunshot wounds inside, authorities said.

Two deputies responding to a call of shots fired on Olive Grove near Community Road at about 6:35 pm arrived at the home and were confronted by a man armed with rifle or shotgun, Lieutenant Dennis Brugos said.

The man was declared dead at the scene and when his body was searched a handgun also was found, Brugos said.

It was not immediately clear whether one or both of the deputies fired on the suspect or how many shots were fired.

Two other people in the house, a woman and her daughter, were uninjured in the attack.

A distress call from the two deputies sent law enforcement officers and firefighters racing to the scene from around the county, but neither deputy was hurt.

Investigators believe the dead gunman was a neighbor of the two victims and the three had been involved in "some kind of ongoing dispute," Brugos said.

The names of the three dead and the deputies were not immediately released.

Homicides are very rare in Poway, a suburban city of 50,000 in eastern San Diego County.
