Street Surveyor Hit by Car, Killed in Emerald Hills

A private contractor crossing the street was hit by a car and killed in Emerald Hills Monday, police said.

Edward Dutton, 73, of Imperial, was working as a street surveyor contractor at the intersection of Geneva Avenue and Winston Drive when he was struck around 7:30 a.m.

The driver, 25, then veered right and struck a parked car, according to San Diego police.

Neighbors who live near the crash told NBC 7 the driver came to their door and asked them to call 911.

Neighbor Judy Kay Lockhart told NBC 7 she heard a loud crashing sound and came outside to see what was going on.

She said she witnessed first responders giving CPR to a man lying on the ground.

"They worked really hard,” neighbor Judy Kay Lockhart said. "The medics were very, very dedicated to trying to save his life."

Dutton was pronounced dead at the scene, police said.

SDPD was investigating the crash. It was not clear if speed or alcohol played a factor.
