1 Dead in Fiery Crash on Scripps Poway Parkway

Scripps Poway Parkway just east of I-15 was reopened to traffic at 7 a.m.

A man was killed in a fiery crash on Scripps Poway Parkway in north San Diego Wednesday, the California Highway Patrol said.

A driver traveling northbound on Interstate 15 took the exit ramp and ran a red light at the end of the ramp before losing control, according to San Diego police.

The 2015 Toyota Prius continued down an embankment where it drove over a sidewalk, through a fence, and into a tree, police said. The Prius rolled and caught fire.

CHP officials say the driver of the vehicle was trapped inside the car as it burned.

San Diego police traffic investigators say a witness attempted to help the driver out of the burning vehicle but was unsuccessful.

The male driver was declared dead at the scene.

Officials closed Scripps Poway Parkway at Scripps Highlands Drive, just east of I-15 after the crash occurred at 2:15 a.m.

Drivers were being rerouted to find another way to the freeway. Some of them were turning around in a nearby shopping center parking lot.

The road was reopened at 7 a.m.
