Some of California's strongest storms in years hammered the state this winter with heavy rainfall and historic levels of snow.
Most of the precipitation was ushered into the region by a weather phenomenon called an atmospheric river -- waves of moisture that move north from tropical areas and over the West Coast.
The freight train of rain has been good for California's drought, but also led to dangerous flooding and severe weather. Winter storms have caused damages that could top $1 billion and taxed the state's water infrastructure.
