Mira Mesa Students Celebrate Reading

Several San Diego schools are celebrating Read Across America, a day honoring Dr. Seuss' birthday that inspires children to read -- even Google joined in the festivities.

The annual celebration is held March 2, and several local schools took part in the festivities on Monday. Among them was Walker Elementary School in Mira Mesa, which kicked off a week of reading activities. The day began with a special assembly, with teachers wearing "Cat in the Hat style head gear.

Visiting children’s authors visited the school, including Larry Keough -- the author of "Fragilly," a story about a polar bear who finds honey in Alaska -- who read to first-graders and talked with them about being a children’s author.

“We want every single child to read and write successfully, and to really experience the joy of reading,” Principal Rochelle Dawes said.
