Woman Found Dead on I-15 South of I-805

An arrest in Coronado may be tied to the discovery of a body on a San Diego highway, officials said.

A section of southbound Interstate 15 just south of Interstate 805 was closed Wednesday as California Highway Patrol officers investigated what happened to a woman found dead in the road.

Clothing was strewn along the road where officials say the woman was dragged over a distance of several feet before the driver drove away.

The initial call to CHP just before 2 a.m. reported what looked like a mannequin in the road. There were also reports earlier of a pedestrian with a shopping cart walking along the freeway just one mile north of the location of the body.

The woman died of severe blunt force trauma, investigators said. They haven't been able to confirm if this is the same pedestrian.

Several cars swerved to avoid hitting the woman, CHP said.

At 5:15 a.m., Coronado Police stopped a driver of a green Kia Rio near Silverstrand Boulevard and Tarawa Road for allegedly driving under the influence. The officer noticed damage to the vehicle and what was described as “flesh debris” on the bumper, according to CHP officials.

After CHP investigators arrived to inspect the car, they say they found consistencies in damage to the car and the active hit-and-run investigation.

The driver was arrested for DUI but has not been charged in the hit-and-run pending more investigation, CHP officials say. A passenger was also taken into custody.

The driver and passenger were questioned and released to Coronado police to determine if they were involved, according to a CHP news release issued Thursday.
